Working on Getting Started Docs

Introduction

This guide serves to explain the workings of the new structure and provides step-by-step instructions on adding and updating the Getting Started documents.

Structure

The structure for the documentation is built on React and follows the following format:

  1. Install: Provide instructions on how to install the language/framework. It usually contains a simple code snippet with the installation command.
  2. Configure: Explain how to configure the language/framework after installation. This section includes an example of a code snippet already providing the DSN of the created project.
  3. Verify: This section should provide instructions and a code snippet demonstrating how users can simulate an error in their application to verify the successful setup of both installation and configuration steps.
  4. Next Steps: Other configurations, usually for features, that users might be interested in.

Adding documentation for a platform

Language

  1. Create a new folder with the name of the language under gettingStartedDocs.
  2. Inside the folder create an index.tsx file.
  3. Copy the content from another file, such as react.tsx, and adapt or update its content to match the requirements of the current platform. Ensure to give the function of the new file, an appropriate name.
  4. Update the MIGRATED_GETTING_STARTD_DOCS list by adding the slug of the platform that is currently being added. This will avoid the backend error “Platform invalid” to be thrown. We can rethink this validation afterward.
  5. Makes sure that the platformicons repository contains the icon for the language you are adding.
  6. Update the list platformIntegrations with a new entry for your language. This entry is responsible for displaying the language icon in the “Select the platform you want to monitor/Choose your platform” list
  7. To ensure proper functionality, create index.spec.tsx file with unit tests for the new platform. You can refer to one of the existing tests, for example, react.spec.tsx, copy its content, and modify it accordingly to suit the newly migrated platform.
  8. Finally, before concluding, please run Sentry locally (it has to be locally due to the backend changed described in step number 4) and perform a manual test to ensure that the getting started documentation renders correctly in both the onboarding process of a new organization and in the project creation flow. This step is essential for verifying the proper functioning and visual appearance of the documentation.

Framework

  1. Locate the framework's language folder within gettingStartedDocs.
  2. Within the folder, create a file named after the framework's slug, and use the .tsx extension
  3. Copy the content from another file, such as react.tsx, and adapt or update its content to match the requirements of the current platform. Ensure to give the function of the new file, an appropriate name.

Notes

  • When documenting a new language/framework, use the "Install," "Configure," and "Verify" structure. Include extra information only if essential for new users to get started. Onboarding docs should be straightforward, while advanced configurations belong to the full documentation on the docs website. Keep it simple for a smooth user experience.
  • You may encounter some documentation that doesn't fit the structure described above, but rest assured, we are actively working on consolidating them.
  • To accommodate diverse documentation during migration, we have implemented a dynamic steps structure. Sometimes, you might question whether to use "additionalInformation" or "description" to explain certain aspects. If the extra information covers everything in the block and “description” is already taken, use "additionalInformation", otherwise, use "description." We are actively working on simplifying this structure to eliminate confusion in the near future.
  • Currently, not all documentation contains “Next Steps” and that is fine.
  • The Getting Started docs are rendered during new organization onboarding and project creation flow
